From Ideas to ActionโHelping Your Board with Clear Goals
Stop the guessing game! Last week's poll revealed that 43.8% of you share general ideas but no clear goals with your board. No wonder they're nodding politely but not taking action!
Think about itโwhen you say "help with fundraising," your board members might be thinking:
"Does that mean I have to ask my friends for money?"
"Should I be doing something right now?"
"What exactly does 'help' look like?"
The magic happens when you get specific! Instead of vague hopes, try crystal-clear expectations: "Each board member is expected to make a personal gift and invite one person to learn about our work this year."
Boomโnow they know exactly what success looks like!
Here's what makes the difference:
Write it down (no more "I thought you said..." moments)
Keep it simple (complexity kills action)
Make it achievable (small wins build big confidence)
Pro tip: Create a one-page "Board Member Expectations" document that lists 3-5 specific, measurable goals for the year. Include both fundraising and non-fundraising ways to contribute. Post it on your board portal, reference it in meetings, and celebrate when goals are met. When expectations are visible and achievable, your board transforms from confused to committed!
