Are Your Board Members Really Resistant—Or Just Waiting for Leadership?
Here's an eye-opener: 55.6% of you feel your board members aren't jumping on the assessment bandwagon. But let's pause and ask: Is that actually true, or could it be our own assumption?
In my years working with nonprofits, I've discovered something surprising: What looks like resistance is often something entirely different!
Think about it—your board members are passionate volunteers who want to make a difference. What if they're not pushing back, but simply:
Wondering exactly what you're asking them to do
Concerned about being judged for their contributions
Unsure how this helps them make a bigger impact
Your power move? Start a real conversation! Try saying: "I'm exploring ways we can strengthen our board effectiveness. What would make an assessment process valuable for YOU?"
Pro tip: A quick anonymous survey can reveal what's really happening. You might be surprised to discover your board is actually ready and willing—they've just been waiting for someone to lead the way!
Remember: Most board members want to excel—they just need to know that assessment is about growth, not criticism. When they see how it leads to better governance and bigger impact, you might find them more excited than you expected!
